If you were going to play a bigger game and go for your dreams, what would it be? Perhaps you feel there is no such thing as a bigger game for you? Yet I’ve found that many people realise there's something bigger for them, only it’s been buried. Or maybe you’re not sure how you would play a bigger game. This is my experience this week. I’d been reading a biography about Richard Branson, the entrepreneur, whom I find inspirational because he’s fun loving and unconventional. The book proves he's someone who plays a very big game, in whatever
I wanted to discover ‘how’ I was going to play a bigger game and although I know that’s not the most effective way forward, I still have a tendency to do this. Surprise, surprise all my thinking about ‘how’ didn’t bring any results. I knew that I needed to shift to being someone who played a bigger game, but although I know all this, I don’t always do things straight away. As I stayed focused on being this person, the idea came to me. I’ve often said I want to be able to work with more people and allow them to experience the benefits of being coached. This is the bigger game for me then – to coach a lot more people in groups. Then fear started to raise its ugly head, as it often does. I reminded myself that to play a bigger game, I would need to grow. This starts with seeing yourself as someone who plays the bigger game. Keep the idea alive that you’re capable of more and take another step closer to your vision. Talk your idea through with someone you trust. When you’ve visualised your bigger game, when you have the belief, you’ll naturally see what actions are required and feel inspired to take them. Playing a bigger game is inspiring, keeps you truly alive and shakes up the status quo, with things being changed or done differently. It’s about being willing to keep playing the game the way you want it and staying detached from the results. A bigger game allows for more excitement and passion. If you’re feeling stuck, you may need to play a bigger game. Fear of failure stops people but so can fear of success. I realised I liked the idea of a having a bigger dream but if I achieved that, what would I do next? If I were successful with this, would I find anything else to excite me? I was fearful that if I played this bigger game, I wouldn’t have it to look forward to but paradoxically, if I play it, there is probably an even bigger game waiting for me in the future. This may be even more exciting, so if I don't take this critical plunge I’m limiting my potential excitement thereafter. Calculate the risk and find ways to reduce it. I love challenging others to play a bigger game but I need my coach to do it for me because I’m too close. Playing a bigger game is different for each person and it may be business, career, personal or relationship related. What do you have to lose? Possibly not a lot. What will it take for you to play a bigger game? Revisit your vision, your dreams and what you hear yourself saying you would love to do. Visualize yourself being this person, take the required action and get whatever support you need. Go for what you truly want!
