Learn The Lessons For Effective
Use Of Your Time

If you want to spend your time more effectively, you must make some changes. As an individual, the changes you need to make could well differ from those of other individuals. Certain changes will have a bigger impact on you than others. So, how do you identify the one change that you most need to make at this moment?

To identify the change that’s most suited and necessary for you, I invite you to consider that you teach what you most need to learn. I was very aware of this while I was writing my recent articles about spending time effectively. I knew there was a good chance that I’d been drawn to writing about time because there was something I needed to learn. But what it was, I had yet to discover. Vision, bigger picture, purpose - these words kept popping into my mind. I knew they were relevant because one of the best ways to lead and manage yourself and therefore spend your time effectively is to be truly in touch with your vision. Your vision not only pulls you forward naturally, but is also a way of choosing what you spend your time effectively on.

I was being with my vision and it was alive for me, but I wasn’t seeing what I needed to learn. Then the lesson hit me. Although I had been making choices about my time in a way that supported my vision, they were only small. I wasn’t committed to taking a bigger leap to bring my vision much more to life.

Although I had time for the things I wanted to do and certainly didn’t feel short of it, I realised I wasn’t moving towards my vision as fast as I wanted to. If I wanted faster progress, then I needed to delegate more. When I finally saw what I needed to learn, the next step was so obvious.

So what was I teaching that I most needed to learn? I might have been spending my time effectively, but it wasn’t propelling me forward, it was keeping me plodding along. So what’s this got to do with you and your time? A lot. The biggest and most important change that you as an individual need to make concerning time, is in what you’re teaching others.

Now you may not see yourself as a teacher in the traditional sense, but we’re all learning and teaching whether we’re aware of it or not. Your teaching may show up in the advice or suggestions you offer to others, when you think you can see a better way to do something and what you hear yourself talking about as being important to you.

If you want to learn what it will take for you to manage your time more effectively, be aware of any thoughts, words or advice you give and see what, if any, connection there is. The lesson may not be so obviously connected with time. For example, when you tell your teenager about the necessity of preparing for exams, perhaps the lesson around time you need to learn yourself is about preparation.

When you tune in to ‘you teach what you most need to learn’, you’re given the opportunity to discover the most important next step you need to take so that you can spend your time more effectively.
