Are you finding it difficult to fit all of the things you want to do into each day? Do you wish you could spend less time working and more time with your family? Do you feel dissatisfied in your professional or personal life? For most of us the answer to these questions is 'yes', and it is not a good feeling. There is a big chance that your work is consuming much more of your time than you want it to. Or you feel that you just do not have the time to achieve your goals in life. Do not fret, your worries could soon be over. There is a solution to your problems. Simply by changing the way you approach the use of your time you can find the hours to do all the things you want to, and even have some time left over. As well as finding more time for the things you want to do, you will also be more fulfilled in your life.
Time management and priorities for managing yourselfEach day has only 24 hours. This is something that you have to accept because it will not change. You can not manage time, but you can manage yourself. This is the secret of effective time management. You must look at the things that are important to you in life and devote your time to these. Everything else should be eliminated from your life. Managing your time effectively will bring about some dramatic improvements in your life, but you must be prepared to make some fundamental changes. However, there is no need to rush, you can make the necessary changes at your own pace. It is best to go slowly, at least to begin with, as you may not succeed if you try to do too much, too soon.
Time management and priorities - How to know yourselfTo really manage your time effectively you must first learn to know yourself. In modern society there are so many distractions we can easily lose our focus on what we really want in our lives. It is difficult to identify where and when this happens, but it inevitably does. So this is the first step in effective time management - finding out what you really want from life. You need to get in touch with yourself and discover your vision. Try to remember yourself as a child or as a young adult when you felt you could achieve anything. How did your dream life look then, what did you really want in your heart? This could help you to get in touch with your vision. It is likely that some of your priorities will have changed since then, but many will have remained the same. You should also think about how you would like your life to be both in terms of your professional life and your personal life. Also consider your potential and what you think you can really achieve in life. We will call this your vision. Where are you now? If you followed the steps above you should be able to picture your ideal life accurately. So here comes the tough part. You need to look at your life now and compare it to your vision, to how you would really like your life to be like. For most people, the difference between the two can be quite daunting. However, no matter how wide the gap is between your ideal reality and how you live your life now, it can be bridged. There is a widely held belief that effective time management is about good time-keeping. Not true. Effective time management can transform your life on a much more fundamental level. Achieving your ideal reality will involve little changes and big changes in your life. For example, watching less television, that is a little change. Quitting your job and starting a business, that is a big change. However, both are achievable with the right approach. You need to look at how you spend your days and plan your time with a view to achieving these goals. Planning your day. You should start by picking two things you want to achieve, one big and one small. Now, you want to think of one small step you can take towards achieving these that you can incorporate into one day. If you can complete the one step towards achieving each goal then you have made an excellent start. In truth, there is much more to it than this but this will show you that it is far from impossible and can be very rewarding. Now you need to make sure that everything you do each day is taking you towards your goals, and that you plan in such a way that you complete all of the tasks you need to do each day. This is why you need a clear time plan for every day. Each day, you will need to have a clear idea of what needs doing and find a suitable place for it on your schedule. At the beginning it can be difficult to know how long each task will take so it may be a good idea to keep a time log for a week before starting to keep a time plan. A time log is a detailed record of how you spend your time each day. Do this for a few days and you will get a clear idea of how you spend your days and how long various tasks take you. Then you can really plan your days accurately. Try to identify the time wasters that are holding you back and eliminate them from your life. These pointers should help you in your first steps towards effective time management. Keep any changes you make gradual and maintain them until they become second nature to you. As you take it step by step, you will gradually move closer to your ideal life, a life where there is plenty of time for the things you want to do. |
